The plastic waste management Rules, 2016, as amended, provide the statutory framework and the prescribed authorities for enforcement of the rules, including ban on identified single plastic items.
In A&N Islands, ban on single use plastic product was imposed vide Gazette notification date 5th Sept, 2019 published by pollution Control Committee Department of Science and Technology, A &N Administration.
Consequent on Imposing ban on single use plastic bags a sudden demand emerged in the market to substitute the plastic nags. To coupe up with the emerging situation our Kendra immediately took an initiative to setup a craft unit for manufacturing of cloth bags for October, 2019 at the time of pandemic Covid – 19. When people become jobless due to declaration of lockdown all over the country which affected our islands also. However, we started the manufacturing of cloths, setting up with 6 sieving machines by providing employment to 25 women of SHG.
Women were engaged for stitching of bags to the women having stitching machine in their homes, with the motto to provide cloth bags to fulfill the demand in the market as well as to create financial support to jobless SHG women. During the period of October 2019 to March 2023 our Craft Unit has produced mask – 50,348 no’s and cloth bags 300,855 nos. whatever the income generated are utilized to meet the purchase of materials and payment of wages to working women and run on no profit & no loss barriers. We are planning to expand to craft unit by manufacturing garments for women and children so the employment can be generated and provide unemployed women of SHG’s in future.





CLOTH BAG’S AS AN ALTERNATE TO PLASTIC BAGS
It is becoming more and more common to see shoppers using their own cloth to when they go shopping. Stores are beginning to pose the question, “DO you need a Bag?” And many companies around the world are looking to reduce their plastic use by taxing of banning plastic bags altogether.
When to happens, it leaves us with the option to either pay the tax or added cost or invest in a reusable cloth bags.
But what makes cloth bags so much better than plastic?
Cloth bags are better than plastic bags for many reasons, but two the biggest reasons are:
Cloth bags are reusable, decreasing the need to use more materials for single use production and cloth bags reduce plastic use and therefore plastic pollution.
Cloth bags refer to any reusable bag that is not made from HDPE Plastic. This ranges from natural fiber to reusable to back packs and even up cycled DIY bags.
